Technique I of III

Embryonic
Breathing

Stabilize your core energy — return to the primordial stillness before breath.

What it is

Embryonic Breathing (胎息, Tāi Xī) is the foundational Taoist practice of breathing from the lower Dan Tian — the energy center 2–3 inches below the navel. It mimics the breath of the unborn: slow, internal, circulating without effort. Energy settles, consolidates, and roots.

The Practice

  1. 01 Sit or lie down. Close your eyes. Place both hands over your lower belly, 2 inches below the navel.
  2. 02 Breathe into your hands. Inhale slowly for 4 counts — feel your belly expand outward in all directions like a sphere filling.
  3. 03 Hold gently for 4 counts. No tension. The energy collects here — sense warmth, fullness, or gentle vibration.
  4. 04 Exhale slowly for 6 counts. Let the belly soften inward, as if the sphere compresses — but the warmth remains.
  5. 05 Repeat for 9–18 cycles. With each breath, the Dan Tian grows warmer. You are filling your reservoir.

🔥 Key insight: The goal is not movement — it is stillness with depth. Your outer breath becomes quieter and quieter until you feel you are breathing from inside the belly itself. This is the embryonic state.

Technique II of III

Microcosmic
Orbit

Draw energy up the spine, pour it down the front — one complete inner loop.

What it is

The Microcosmic Orbit (小周天) circulates Qi along two primary meridians: the Du Mai (Governor Vessel) rising up the spine and over the crown, and the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) descending down the face, throat, and chest back to the Dan Tian. This inner loop purifies and amplifies vital energy.

The Pathway

Start at the lower Dan Tian (below navel) → Hui Yin (perineum) → up the spine → Ming Men (kidneys) → Da Zhui (base of skull) → Bai Hui (crown) → down the face → Ren Zhong (upper lip) → throat → heart → solar plexus → return to Dan Tian.

The Practice

  1. 01 Establish the Dan Tian first. Complete 3–5 rounds of Embryonic Breathing. Let warmth build below the navel.
  2. 02 On your next inhale, gently draw energy downward through the perineum, then imagine it rising up your spine — vertebra by vertebra — to the crown.
  3. 03 Touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth just behind the teeth. This connects the two meridians — closing the circuit.
  4. 04 On your exhale, let the energy pour down from the crown — over the face, throat, chest, belly — back into the Dan Tian like warm golden water.
  5. 05 Complete 9–36 orbits. The sensation may be warmth, tingling, light, or simply a felt sense of movement. Don't force it — guide it.

🌿 Key insight: Use intention, not effort. The mind leads the Qi — wherever attention goes, energy follows. A soft, curious awareness is more powerful than concentration.

Technique III of III

Macrocosmic
Orbit

Dissolve the boundary between self and universe — become the breath of the cosmos.

What it is

The Macrocosmic Orbit (大周天) extends the circulation beyond the body itself — down through the legs into the Earth, and up through the crown to connect with Heaven. The practitioner becomes a channel: Earth energy rises, Heavenly energy descends, and they merge in the heart-center. You cease to be a separate being; you become a point where the universe breathes through itself.

The Practice

  1. 01 Complete the Microcosmic Orbit first — several rounds. Feel the inner loop stable and flowing.
  2. 02 Extend downward. On an exhale, let the energy flow out through the perineum, down both legs, out the soles of the feet — deep into the Earth. Feel roots growing.
  3. 03 Inhale Earth energy. Draw the Earth's magnetic warmth back up through your feet, legs, into the perineum — filling the Dan Tian like water rising in a well.
  4. 04 Let it rise up the spine to the crown and continue — out through the top of the head into the sky, connecting with the Heavens, the stars, the infinite.
  5. 05 Exhale Heaven energy down through the crown, face, chest, belly, legs — back into the Earth. You are the bridge. Heaven and Earth breathe through you.
  6. 06 Expand your awareness outward in all directions simultaneously — 360° sphere growing with each breath. The skin dissolves. You are field, not form.

✦ Key insight: This is not visualization — it is a shift in identity. You stop being a body doing a practice, and become the space in which all of this is happening. Rest in that openness.

DURATION

10–20 min

DURATION

10–20 min

Practice daily. Morning is ideal — before the world claims your energy. Begin with Embryonic until you feel warmth in the Dan Tian every session. Then introduce the Microcosmic. Only after the inner loop feels natural and effortless should you attempt the Macrocosmic.

There is no rush. The energy does not expire.
